The debate of hydrogen viability rumbles on

I thought we'd all decided that using hydrogen to replace mains gas to heat our buildings wasn't going to work?

Turns out, Government wants to know if we've changed our minds about this and have launched a couple of new consultations.

Cartoon of builders attempting to fix a leaking gas pipe. Instead of gas, the pipe is leaking coins.
Pumping hydrogen through existing infrastructure isn't viable, so what options are available if the UK proceeds with a large scale hydrogen roll-out?

The first one makes more sense... it explores how we could create brand new, hydrogen-only pipe networks to feed major transport hubs and industrial sectors... Places that are 'hard to electrify'.

Can we use hydrogen to reduce emissions from these sectors through new infrastructure that doesn't use gas at all? And if so, what frameworks and needed to make that happen.

The second link covers old ground.. Should we start pumping a hydrogen gas blend into our existing pipes and bring down the emissions of domestic gas-fuelled heating systems that way?

There's surely a place for green hydrogen in our zero carbon future somewhere, but exactly Where, When and How remains to be seen.
