🔌🚘 EV chargers will soon be mandatory on new building projects across Wales.

The Welsh Government consulted on this a while ago, following in the footsteps of the UK Government’s Approved Document Part S which launched in 2021.

Details of the Welsh Part S can be found here… they haven’t announced a launch date yet.

Hopefully, EV charger installers in Wales will do a better job than this dragon when the new Part S goes live. The closed loop, the position, the parking... there's a lot going on here!

🌰 In a nutshell:

⚡ Every new home with a driveway or dedicated parking space must have a charger fitted; not just the infrastructure.

⚡ Chargers will also be required on renovation projects with 10 parking spaces or more.

⚡ And car parks for non-residential buildings will need chargers for at least 20% of parking spaces.

There are exemptions:

🚫 If the cost of installing chargers is too much

🚫 If the quantity of chargers raises concerns about local grid capacity

🚫 If installation on listed buildings or in protected areas would impact the character or appearance (decided locally and case-by-case)

🚫 All covered and basement car parks are exempt

❓ A question to housebuilders in England, Part S has existed for a good few years now. Any advice for our Welsh colleagues?
