It was good to see Elmhurst's Stuart Fairlie in this article, raising the issue of outdated methodology that currently drives our EPC ratings. 👏

It's after a chap installed a heat pump and PV in his house, and was given a worse Energy Performance Certificate for his troubles. ☀️ 💰

In this case there seems to be assessor fault in the mix, but the underlying issue of using fuel costs to calculate EPCs, when the price of fossil fuels are so much cheaper than electricity, is the scar that won't heel.

It's perfectly reasonable for Joe Public to expect an A-rating after investing in so many home improvements. Thankfully, work is already underway to make EPCs fit for the future.

We had a consultation about EPC Reform at the start of the year, and we should be getting the official Government response in the coming months.

This will hopefully recommend the roll-out of a new generation of EPCs, focused on fabric performance, promoting clean energy, and created using the new Home Energy Model.
